About Luc Matthew Bodden
Luc was the kind of kid you want to explore the Universe with. Luc was wise beyond his years and brought warmth into every room he stepped into. Luc had an exquisite pallet and a deep love for food. Luc loved eating everything like pizza, gourmet burgers, crab, filet mignon, lobster, and sushi (especially Uni). Luc was very adventurous when it came to food that he even tried fried rattle snake. That was our Luc, he wasn’t afraid of anything. He was the strongest kid and he oozed confidence that you could see the moment he was in your presence.
Luc loved his family and friends.
Luc loved Jesus Christ.
Luc loved his beloved Oak Park community.
Luc loved sports and watching and attending games from high school to the professional level.
Luc’s favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys -favorite player Dez Bryant
Luc’s favorite basketball team was the OKC Thunder and the Golden State Warriors- favorite players Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Steph Curry
Luc’s favorite baseball team was the Los Angeles Dodgers- favorite player Matt Kemp
Everyone knew Luc was a special kid but what many did not know was that Luc had sickle cell anemia.
In the early part of his life, Luc managed to evade many of sickle cells painful symptoms such as pain crisis. However, when Luc turned 2 years old, doctors found a narrowing of a vein in his brain that made Luc prone to strokes. The doctors told us in that in order to fix this, Luc would need to undergo a bone marrow transplant. When Luc was seven, he had a bone marrow transplant to cure him of sickle cell disease and it worked. However, there were many complications along the way. Luc’s health trajectory was great after the bone marrow transplant and he lived sickle cell free for three years. But ultimately, he got an infection in his blood which created new complications to his already weaken immune system and Luc went to heaven in 2016 at the age of 10.
Our family knows firsthand how hard battling sickle cell can be and the emotional and financial stress that it can have on a household. So, we created The LucStrong Foundation in Luc’s honor. We want to give families with sickle cell patients all of the resources that we would have loved to access to through our journey.
Luc may not be with us today, but he is making things better for kids like him with his story. Help us make a difference in the lives for all of the other Luc’s in the world.
